David Michôd

Variety announced David Michôd’s next film project on April 5, 2012:

Aussie filmmaker David Michôd has finally settled on his follow-up to “Animal Kingdom,” as he’s set to write and direct “The Rover” for David Linde’s Lava Bear banner and Oz-based Porchlight Films. Michôd is writing the script, based on an idea he and “Animal Kingdom” star Joel Edgerton originated. Story follows a man on a mission to retrieve his stolen car, which contains something invaluable to him.

Linde will produce for Lava Bear, while Liz Watts will produce for Porchlight; Tory Metzger will oversee the project for Lava Bear. Producers are eying a fall start date in Australia.

Michôd recently co-wrote the Sundance short “Bear” with director Nash Edgerton, Joel’s older brother. Trio are part of the Blue-Tongue Films collective that also includes “Hesher” helmer Spencer Susser and Kieran Darcy-Smith (“Wish You Were Here“). Michod is also directing a segment of “Sydney Unplugged,” a series of short films set in Australia’s largest city.

Joel Edgerton, who recently starred in “Warrior” and is filming Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled military thriller, continues to remain a double threat, having sold his spec script “One Night Stand” to New Regency back in January. Thesp will soon be seen in Disney’s “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” and Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” which WB opens Christmas Day.

Lava Bear is developing an untitled love story involving a giant, which Gil Kenan is attached to direct from his own script.

Porchlight, which produced “Animal Kingdom,” recently produced Willem Dafoe-starrer “The Hunter” and Cate Shortland’s “Lore.”

Michôd is repped by UTA, Cameron Creswell Agency and attorney Alan Wertheimer, while Edgerton is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management and attorney Robert S. Wallerstein.

From Twitch:

Australian director, David Michôd, clearly, is his own man. And he wants to stay that way. After winning Sundance with his feature debut Animal Kingdom – which picked up an Oscar nom for Jackie Weaver – Hollywood came knocking in a big way with Michôd given the chance to take the step out of Australia and into the studio system. And his answer, evidently, is thanks but no. He’d rather keep telling his own stories.

Michôd’s next will be The Rover, a picture he will write and direct from an idea he came up with alongside his Animal Kingdom co-star Joel Edgerton. The story will revolve around a man trying to recover his stolen car, a car which contains something he needs back rather badly. Lava Bear and Porchlight Films will produce.

Excerpt from Daily Telegraph:

DIRECTOR David Michôd is re-teaming with Joel Edgerton for the follow-up to his hugely successful debut.

Variety reports the Animal Kingdom filmmaker has turned down several high profile Hollywood projects to concentrate on a more personal feature.

The film – titled The Rover – was developed by Michôd and Joel Edgerton and follows a man who goes looking for his stolen car which contains an “invaluable item to him”.

Excerpt from Indiewire/The Playlist:

Will it have the same scope as “Animal Kingdom“? Tread new ground? It certainly sounds like a leaner picture, but then again, all we know from it is a logline a few words long. Either way, we’ll be paying attention. Michôd arrived in a huge way with his feature debut, and we’re eager to see how those skills and talents develop.
