“Just a little background….that pic of Rob I gave you, I took the original at the end of a day’s shooting in the Desert near Leigh Creek…and he was well and truly “over it”, as were we all. We did get into the vodka that night…we needed it!

The digital artwork takes me about a day to do what I wish, or want to see in the piece, then about a day rendering. I like doing portraits of people I work with, and people I love.”

You many remember back in March Samuel Johnson from Love your Sister passed through the set of “The Rover” while on his trip around Australia on a unicycle to raise $1 mill for cancer research.
He snapped some pics with Rover stars Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson & Anthony Hayes. (If you missed it check out the pics HERE) and now they’ve released some video of Guy on the set.

Guy Pearce spoke to TheAustralian.com while doing promo for “Iron Man 3″ and told them about his acting style on ”The Rover”, working with David Michod & more

“Things are working for Pearce. He’s having a lovely run of local and international film and television roles and canny choices, even if his recent outings in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, John Hillcoat’s Lawless and now Shane Black’s takeover of the Iron Man series, suggest he is the cinema’s villain du jour.

“People seem to think that’s where I’m good at landing at the moment,” he says, laughing.

That suits Pearce fine because he enjoys playing characters with “a little edge”.

And he also has matured as an actor. He no longer needs to be the aloof star who retires to his trailer between takes or has to method act his way into a dark role.

Pearce has just completed work in South Australia opposite Robert Pattinson in David Michod’s futuristic chase movie, The Rover. While inhabiting the Animal Kingdom director’s “dark mind”, Pearce says he enjoyed being light on set during a heavy movie because it saved him the energy he needed for the next lines of dialogue.

“In the past I used to try to hang on to the character 24 hours a day and I realised after some time it was exhausting,” he says.

The Victorian recalls acting years ago and “sitting in the corner quietly and ignoring everybody but I found that by the time camera was rolling you had really run out of steam because you were doing it all f . . king day long.” “

Producer Liz Watts mentions again how much they enjoyed filming in the towns of South Australia and how incredibly accommodating the Adelaide Studios were to work with. There’s also talk of a “possible” release time.

“The small towns and semi-desert landscape of South Australia’s outback will feature on the big screen as the buzz surrounding Australian feature film The Rover, starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, continues to grow.
The Rover, written and directed by David Michôd and produced by Liz Watts, David Linde, and David Michôd through Porchlight Films, in association with Lava Bear Films LLC, has recently completed its seven weeks of principal photography in South Australia, utilising the unique desert landscape SA offers to provide the perfect backdrop for the film’s storyline.

Set in the Australian desert in ‘a dangerous and damaged near future’, The Rover tells the story of Eric (Pearce) who has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him when a gang of desperate criminals steals his last possession. Eric sets off on a ruthless mission to track them down, forced along the way to enlist the help of Rey (Pattinson), the naïve and injured junior member of the gang who was left behind in the chaos of the gang’s most recent robbery.

SAFC CEO Richard Harris said “The SAFC was very excited to get behind The Rover, David Michôd’s first film since his critically acclaimed, box office smash, Animal Kingdom. It is the latest example of a project that has chosen to use South Australia’s unique outback locations to dramatic effect.”

“SA’s capacity to offer locations both diverse and accessible within cooee of Adelaide and to provide Adelaide Studios as an ideal production base to support the location set, make us an attractive proposition. The Rover production team has tested our capacity to deliver both at the studios and on location and we’ve relished the opportunity to demonstrate our world class capability.

“The ability of South Australia to offer dramatic, unique and stunning landscapes, mixed with towns of distinctive original character, all supported by world class facilities (as those at the Studios) was a major part of our decision to shoot in South Australia. We found the Adelaide Studios incredibly accommodating to our needs- flexible and willing to work with us on different elements of production we needed. They were simply, great”, commented Liz Watts, producer of The Rover.

Shooting a film is never easy, but one of the most important elements of success is the level of support shown by local councils, and how warmly the cast and crew are welcomed by the community.

“For us, our ability to work with locals and townships and location owners in shooting was a really important part of achieving the look and tone of the film that we wanted. We shot in five key areas; around Port Augusta; Quorne and its neighbours, Hammond and Bruce; Hawker; Parachilna and lastly the absolutely unique Marree. Ever since David and I first visited Marree last year in surveys we were keen to include the town in the film, and we ended up spending just over two and a half weeks there with around 100 cast and crew, effectively doubling the population of the town. But the support we found there from the whole community was exceptional. I believe The Rover is the first feature film (since the amazing Back of Beyond documentary was shot there in the 1950s) to shoot in Marree, and we feel pretty priviledged in doing so”, shared Watts.

“We worked with locals in many ways including great locations and their owners, plus cast and extras. For our crew, this film has been a really memorable experience – as it was for our two leads, Guy and Rob” she continued.

Richard Harris also said “our aim is to work closely with Producers to ensure their projects can be realised in SA with minimal fuss and maximum support. Combine this with the film friendly culture of South Australia’s regional and outback communities and the lowest production costs for living and accommodation of any Australian state capital, and it’s clear why shooting in SA continues to be an attractive proposition for projects such as The Rover.”

THE ROVER will be completed in late 2013 and theatrical release timed for first quarter 2014. Australian distributor is Village Roadshow with FilmNation distributing internationally.”

The Sydney Morning Herald spoke to Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson about The Rover. The men discussed the bond between their characters, Eric and Rey, the tone of the film and mention of a film release was teased. Read on for great remarks about The Rover!

Guy Pearce has given a glimpse of what to expect from The Rover, the futuristic film he finished shooting with Robert Pattinson in outback South Australia last month. Director David Michod’s keenly-anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom is ”an unusual story” set in a world gone wrong in the near future.

”It’s a military state now, it’s every man for himself a little bit, it’s a very bleak kind of world,” says Pearce, who’s about to reach cinemas as the villain in Iron Man 3. In The Rover, the Australian star plays the title role, a damaged man named Eric with nothing left to live for. Trying to track down a dangerous gang, he meets a young stranger, Rey (Pattinson), and they forge an uneasy alliance.

“[He's] somebody he has no interest in,” Pearce says. “He’s purely using him to get where he needs to go. So through this bleak … world, there’s a little connection that’s kind of made, which on some level you might think would be a positive thing for this character.

“But on some level it actually makes things worse for him – to really believe that there’s some sense of love in the world or any sense of humanity or compassion. So it’s a pretty bleak story.”

As filming finished in the small town of Marree, almost 700 kilometres north of Adelaide, Pattinson said he wanted to be part of The Rover because “it was a startlingly original script, and it was one of those parts where you read it and you think, ‘I’d love to do this, but I know I’m never going to get it’.”

To play Rey, the Twilight star was dressed as unkempt and unshaven, with make-up to discolour his teeth. Pattinson says his character, an American who has come to Australia with his brother (played by Scoot McNairy), is “the kind of person who has been brought up to believe they’re incapable of living independently. Someone has always been looking after him.”

The two central characters, Eric and Rey, have a shifting relationship that Pattinson described as “strange and disturbing.” It’s a film, expected to be out later this year, that seems to have echoes of the classic post-apocalyptic Australian film Mad Max. ”Not as camp though,” says Pearce, was also in Animal Kingdom. ”Mad Max is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s heightened in a way, whereas this is pretty earnest.”

Continuing with his promo for “Iron Man 3″ Guy Pearce spoke to Angela Bishop from Ten News Australia and said how he thought people would be quite surprised by Robert Pattinson’s performance in “The Rover”.

The Daily Telegraph (AU) had a chance to sit down with Guy Pearce to talk about working with Robert Pattinson in The Rover. He had nothing but great things to say:

Robert Pattinson is the real deal, according to Guy Pearce, his co-star in The Rover. The two actors have just spent seven weeks together in the South Australian Outback, filming director David Michod’s hotly-anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom, with Pearce waxing lyrical about his co-stars ‘‘beautiful face”.

”The best thing about Rob is that he is a really great actor,” says Pearce. ‘‘Watching the rushes back, you go: ‘OK, he is just going to be fantastic’.”

The Twilight star plays white trailer trash from the southern states of America in the futuristic western, set in an apocalyptic near future where society has broken down in the wake of a severe financial crisis.

”He plays (the character) slightly backward, emotionally useless and really vulnerable,” says Pearce. ”He’s got this beautiful face so you are completely entranced by that face no matter how ugly he makes himself or how wounded he is, or how manky his haircut.”

Can’t wait to see this! Here’s hoping some more teases are on the way.

IMDB have updated The Rover status to say that it’s now in Post-Production.
